Summer Intensive FAQ

How are Summer Intensive (SI) courses structured?

Summer Intensive classes are designed to be high contact, in person, participatory courses. Most of the coursework is compressed into day-long sessions across one week of meetings. Because this format leaves little time for readings, homework, or final assignments during the in-person week, SI students should expect some prework, which they must complete prior to the in-person sessions, and some assignments due after the in-person week. Any pre- or post-SI work can be completed remotely.

What are the costs to take an SI course?

SI courses are compressed, but billed just like a regular 2-credit summer course. Students should expect to pay the same tuition they would for a 2-credit course in a regular semester, plus any course-specific fees.

When can I register for an SI course?

For 2026, SI courses follow the standard summer registration calendar.

What are the expectations for attendance and participation?

Because SI courses compress a full 2-credit course into just one week, students are expected to attend all sessions, barring extraordinary circumstances. Missing one day of an SI class is equivalent to missing multiple weeks of a traditional course, and it may prove very difficult to make up work. SI instructors’ syllabi will spell out their policies on attendance more fully, but in general SI students should expect to be present for all scheduled days of their chosen course(s).

Can non-degree seeking students take SI courses?

Yes! Non-degree-seeking students can enroll in SI graduate courses, provided they have a bachelor’s degree and follow the procedures outlined here to register.
